Team Profile

The United States began their campaign for theWorld Cup South Africa in impressive style, by leading the CONCACAF group standings with a total of 20 points (6 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses), just one point of Mexico. The Americans’ first-place finish in qualifying for Germany 2006 and a recent win over Mexico which brought a fourth CONCACAF Gold Cup has many saying that the USA that is the more competitive of the two teams heading into qualifying for South Africa 2010.

This is the sixth consecutive World Cup appearance for the United States. They have qualified every event since Italy 1990. However, they haven’t always enjoyed this much international football success. Prior to their appearance in 1990, the United States national football team missed the previous nine World Cup events, which is a 40 year gap between World Cup appearances.

The Americans’ best finish in the World Cup came in Korea/Japan 2002 where they were close to reaching the semi-finals before losing a close match to Germany in the quarterfinals by a final score of 1-0.

A first-round exit from Germany 2006 had some wondering if the success of 2002 was an anomaly, but 2009 brought a return to positive thinking and hope for future glories as the US national team beat the defending 2008 Euro Cup champions Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup 2-0. They lost to Brazil 3-2 in the finals.

The current team is led by homegrown coach Bob Bradley.
