Team Profile

Uruguay is appearing in their 11th World Cup finals in South Africa 2010, having won two FIFA World Cup titles, including the first ever World Cup in 1930 as hosts, defeating Argentina 4-2 in the finals. They won their second title in 1950, upsetting hosts Brazil 2-1 in the final match. They also won the Gold Medals in football at the Summer Olympics twice, in 1924 and 1928, before the creation of the World Cup. Although those two World Cup championship titles were long ago, Uruguay have also reached the semi-finals only twice in 1954 and 1970 and have won just one of their last 16 FIFA World Cup matches which is a great disappointment for the two-time world champions.

Since their semi-final performance in 1970, Uruguay has been unable to make it past the second round of the World Cup in the last three decades.

Even with their abysmal performances in the last few decades, Uruguay won more international titles than any other country in the world and still holds this record, albeit it is now shared with Argentina. They are also the smallest populated country to ever win the World Cup at 4 million. The next smallest populated country to win a World Cup is Argentina, who had a population of 40 million when they won a World Cup.

Uruguay defeated Costa Rica in the playoff round witha final score 2-1 to qualify for World Cup 2010 South Africa.
