Team Profile
After failing to qualify for World Cup France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002, Switzerland finally claimed a place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany after coach Jakob "Kobi" Kuhn’s men emerged victorious from a playoff match against Turkey. After a playing career featuring 63 caps and six domestic championships with FC Zurich, Kuhn took the national helm in June 2001 as Swiss head coach. Prior to coaching the national team, Kuhn coached the Swiss U-21 team.Kuhn stepped down as Switzerland coach after their failure to qualify for the EURO 2008 quarter-finals, and former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has been chosen to replace him.
Although Switzerland is not new to playing on the big stage; 2010 World Cup South Africa will be the second consecutive, and ninth overall, World Cup appearance for Switzerland. However, they have enjoyed very little success in the later rounds of the tournament, failing to get further than the quarterfinals in World Cup history. The Swiss made the second round in their previous FIFA World Cup appearance at USA 1994, and repeated in 2006 where they lost in the round of 16 for both campaigns.
The Swiss squad boasts a healthy blend of experience and youth. Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta and Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos are the best-known internationally.
