Team Profile
The South Africa national football team or Bafana Bafana is the national team of South Africa and is controlled by the South African Football Association. South Africa automatically qualified to the event as they are the host of World Cup 2010. They returned to the World Cup qualifiers in 1992, after being banned from FIFA for over 20 years because of Apartheid. In 1991, with the apartheid system beginning to be demolished, a new multiracial South African Football Association was formed, and admitted to FIFA.
South Africa have since qualifed for two World Cup events (World Cup 2010 being their third apperance as the host nation) making their first appearance in France 1998 and the second in Korea/Japan in 2002. However, for both events in which South Africa qualified for, their supporters saw early exits in both showings as the football club failed to make it past the group stages.
With the recent Confederations Cup also being hosted in South Africa, the Bafana Bafana club showed some promise coming into World Cup 2010 as they finished in fourth place after losing a very close matchup with the defending 2008 Euro Cup champions Spain with a final score of 3-2.
Some of the honours that the South African football club has received in its history includes one African Nations Cup (1996) and three COSAFA Cups (2002, 2007, 2008). Currently, their team is lead by Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
South Africa will be the first ever African country to host the World Cup in FIFA history.
