Team Profile
Slovenia played their first international match in 1992 after the split of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991. Before that, Slovenian players played for the Yugoslavia national football team.
The first major international tournament that Slovenia qualified for was UEFA EURO 2000. Slovenia were surprise qualifiers when they beat Ukraine in a playoff. They turned some heads during the tournament, drawing with Yugoslavia and Norway, and only losing to Spain 2–1.
After failing to qualify for World Cup 1998 in France, Slovenia qualified for their first World Cup appearance in World Cup Korea/Japan 2002. However, their first showing in the event was a disappointing one, as Slovenia lost all three of their group stage matches.
Slovenia was able to redeem themselves in the UEFA EURO 2004 by finishing second in their qualifying group, right behind continental heavyweights France.
Slovenia hit the ground running as World Cup 2006 in Germany qualifying got underway, a 3-0 victory over Moldova and a shock 1-0 over Italy. Despite failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, they were the only team to beat Italy on their way to winning the tournament.
Their downswing continued in UEFA EURO 2008 as they failed to qualify as they were placed in a competitive group stage with the likes of Romania, Netherlands and Bulgaria.
However, the team is about to experience a change of generations which has lead Slovenia to their second World Cup tournament in South Africa 2010. Slovenia defeated Russia on penalties to reach South Africa 2010 World Cup.
