The Nigeria national football team, nicknamed the Super Eagles, is currently the second best team in the African continent that have qualified for World Cup 2010, behind Cameroon. They are currently ranked 32nd and 14 respectively. The highest position ever reached on the ranking was 5th in April 1994.

Nigeria has made it to three of the last four World Cup events, only missing Germany 2006. World Cup 2010 in South Africa will be the fourth World Cup finals that Nigeria will participate in. The Super Eagles have yet to make it past the Round of 16 in their three World Cup showings. Nigeria made their first World Cup Soccer appearance at USA 1994.

Nigeria’s current coach is Shaibu Amodu, who has recently taken over from the German Berti Vogts. The appointment of Vogts, a FIFA World Cup winner with West Germany in 1974, was an indication of Nigeria’s determination to reach South Africa 2010. But after a disappointing performance at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, Vogts decided to stand down.

The Super Eagles have a mass of stars based at clubs throughout Europe, including names such as Nwankwo Kanu and Joseph Yobo provide the experience in the side, but new faces like Laziale Stephen Makinwa, John Obi Mikel, Taye Taiwo, Obafemi Martins and former Stade Rennais man John Utaka (now with Portsmouth). This will be the group Nigeria neesd to rely on if they hope to make it further than the Round of 16 this time around.
