Team Profile

A founding member of FIFA, Denmark waited a long time for international success, appearing for the first time in a FIFA World Cup in 1986. They enjoyed much success in their first appearance when they had 6-1 victory over two-time champions Uruguay and finished ahead of Germany in their group standings with three wins. However, they made an early exit as they lose to Spain 5-1 in the round of 16.

Denmark’s greatest football moment to date came during the 1992 European Championship in Sweden. Denmark was eliminated in the qualifiers, but then reinstated into the tournament when Yugoslavia withdrew due to internal political conflict. Denmark seized this opportunity and powered their way to the finals, where they defeated reigning champions Germany 2-0.

In the three World Cup campaigns that Denmark has participated in have seen limited success, with the club failing to make it further than the quarterfinal rounds. The France 1998 campaign ended with a thrilling, but dissappointing, quarter-final defeat to Brazil 3-2,. At Korea/Japan 2002 they again reached the round of 16 before losing to England 3-0.

Drawn in arguably the toughest section alongside Ukraine, Turkey and reigning European champions Greece, the Danes finished just a point behind the Turks in third and failed to make it past the group stage in World Cup Germany 2006.

However, Danish fans can look forward to Soccer 2010, as World Cup South Africa 2010 will be the fourth World Cup appearance for the Danes.
