Team Profile
Soccer 2010 for Brazil is business as usual. Brazil is one of, if not, the most successful teams in FIFA World Cup history. When it comes to the World Cup, no other team has, score more goals, won more titles and games than Brazil has. They have the championship five times, winning it in 1958. 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2000. They have appeared in seven finals matches, and have placed third twice in 80 years of World Cup history.
With Brazil’s phenomenal recent record at the finals, it is easy to forget that it was not always that way. Back in 1950 was the first time Brazil reached the finals of a World Cup when they were hosting the event but failed to count on Obdulio Varela’s indomitable Uruguay side snatching victory in the decisive game. There was a happier ending in Sweden eight years later, when a 17-year-old Pele, a legend amongst Brazilian football history, guided Brazil to their first championship title. Pele’s amazing skills, along with those of Garrincha and other fabled names, ensured the country’s continued domination over the next few years as further titles were added at Chile 1962 and at Mexico 1970.
With Pele’s retirement marked a downturn in Brazilian football in which the team failed to reach another World Cup final until 24 years. The skill of Romario and Bebeto and the leadership of Dunga, Parreira guided Brazil to victory where they defeated Italy in 1990 in a shootout to hoist the championship and reach the pinnacle of world football once again.
In 1998, with Ronaldo having assuming Romario’s mantle, the team coached by the legendary Mario Zagallo fell to France in the Finals, opening a wound that would take four years to heal where they proceeded to defeat all-comers with the talents ofRivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho to claim a fifth FIFA World Cup championship.
Brazil is always considered a favourite to win the World Cup, and is one of the favourites again to win at World Cup South Africa 2010. They have yet to fail to qualify for the tournament. Last World Cup event was the first time in the the past four events that Brazil has failed to reach the championship round, losing to France 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
