2005 market the debut of Australia in the the Asian Football confederation. The Aussies brought with them into the AFC a new vibrancy, that helped rejuvenate the league. Five years after joining, they won a qualifying spot in the FIFA 2010 World Cup happening this year in South Africa.
During August of 2005, the Australian Hyundai A-League held their first full on professional championship and by November they secured their spot in World Cup 2010 in South Africa, the first time reaching a World Cup final in 32 years.
Soccer popularity in Australia reached it’s pinnacle in 2006, when the team reached the second round of the World Cup in Germany. They lost by a sliver of a margin to Italy, which was to become the eventual World Cup winners.
The Aussies were the only Asian team to reach the knockout phase during the 2006 World Cup, which secured their place in World Cup 2010 in South Africa 3rd stage qualifying round. Pim Verbeek has vowed to Australian fans that he will take the team to the quarter finals of World Cup Soccer 2010 in South Africa.
