Team Profile

Argentina is one of the most successful national football teams in the world, and is currently ranked six in the FIFA world rankings. They have made it to the FIFA World Cup finals four times in history and has won it twice in 1978 and 1986 during the era if Diego Maradona, one of the greatest footballers of all time. Their record in the last three CONMEBOL qualifying competitions underlines the power they wield in South America. Yet despite finishing as continental leaders in 1997 and 2001, and runners-up in 2005, Argentina have recently shown inability to convert such obvious potential into convincing title challenges come the finals themselves, where they have been strangely absent from the last four World Cup events. Argentina was on their way to winning a third World Cup in 1990 only to be thwarted in the finals by Germany. That was the last time they have reached a World Cup Final.

With the Maradona era at an end in 1994 when he failed to past the drug test, the Argentinian squad only succeeded to put on a satisfactory showing in the following World Cups, making to only as far as the quarterfinals in France 1998 and in Germany 2006 where they lost to Netherlands and Germany respectively.

Although they have failed to reach the finals in nearly two decades, the success of their World Cup qualifying gives them the status as contending team to win the World Cup in South Africa 2010.
