The Victoria and Albert Museums: A Must See in London
Many visitors to London check out the popular tourist sites – the London eye, Big Ben, Westminister Abbey, and the Natural History Museum, but a hidden gem, that is probably less visited, but well worth your time, is the Victoria and Albert Museums.
The Victoria and Albert Museums, often called the V&A, are actually three museums: The main V&A museum at South Kensington (map), the V&A Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green (map), and the archives and stores at Blythe House, Kensington Olympia (map).
The main museum on Cromwell Road is located in the South Kensington district, an area commonly known London’s “Albertopolis”, an area of immense cultural, scientific and educational importance. Nearby you’ll also find The Natural History Museum and The Science Museum.
The V&A is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. Founded in 1852, it was named after Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. It has art from ancient times to the present day, including ceramic, glass, costumes, silver, jewelery, furniture, medieval objects, sculpture, prints, drawings and photographs.
A great place to start your day exploring the main museum is at Patisserie-Valerie just down the road from V&A at 215 Brompton Road (map). Here you can enjoy fresh fruit salads, croissants and danishes, make sure to wash it down with an English Breakfast tea to fuel up for your day exploring the museum.
It would take a week or more to see all there is in the main museum, so for a day visit, the best idea is to pick two to three galleries to see in the morning, take a break, and then choose another two or three galleries to see in the afternoon.
