As a child I always thought that the Toronto Island was a place that you took a ferry to for the day – had a picnic, maybe go on a pony ride, play in the park – and then take the ferry home. However, for 650 people, the island is home!
The Toronto Island found its roots as a “tent city” in the early 1900′s, but now it has 262 real homes on it. Many of the original homes were purchased from a catalogue, others were floated in. The island still has no cars, stores or banks on it and is a unique part of Toronto’s urban landscape.
If you’re visiting Toronto – make sure to take the ferry out and spend a day wandering around the islands and take a look at the amazing buildings that people call home. It will feel like you’re a world away from the bustling city! The cottages are quaint and nestled in the greenery of the island. So rent a bike and take a cruise and admire a different lifestyle out on the island!
Once you make your way back to the mainland – make sure you have a place to rest your head! Check out our great Toronto short term rentals.
